SCI FI Channel does not renew SG-1

You know when an unexpected news comes and hits you in the face. I now know what it feels to be taken off guard and dropped like a rock. Stargate SG-1, that aired four five years on Showtime and then received an extended life thanks to SCI FI Channel has not been renewed for an eleventh season. The ratings of the past weeks did not help either. The official world from SCI FI can be read this way:

SCI FI Channel is proud to be the network that brought Stargate SG-1 to its record-breaking 10th season. Ten seasons and 215 episodes is an astounding, Guinness World Record-setting accomplishment. Stargate is a worldwide phenomenon. Having achieved so much over the course of the past 10 years, SCI FI believes that the time is right to make this season their last on the channel. SCI FI is honored to have been part of the Stargate legacy for five years, and we look forward to continuing to explore the Stargate universe with our partners at MGM through a new season of Stargate Atlantis.

I can understand a business model, I understand a show needs good ratings to draw advertisers and from there a networks pays a studio to produce a TV Show. Now the good thing about hearing that news at the end of the day is that I did not have to go through all the emotions of hatred I’d like to express torwards this cable network. Robert C. Cooper, executive producer of Stargate SG-1 gave us a few words to help us go through those harsh times. (1) SG-1 is not dead yet. (2) Don’t boycott SCI FI channel and watch the shows live. Now the logic is to keep SG-1 on track and find a new way to broadcast of sell it. We’re talking a Miniseries, Movies, direct to DVD or be salvaged by an other network. I think we’d need a network that does not limit itself to the United States, I mean I would watch the show LIVE, every single week. I buy the DVD, show my support and watch the show whenever it’s in syndication over alternate networks (in French on TQS).

SG-1 back in the days

On a positive note, the 200th episode brought an increase on 36% on the ratings, that single show beat the average last season had. So all we can do is hope for the best and that every friend I have south of the border will tune in on SCI FI and help the ratings grow strong (even if you’re going out, leave the TV set opened on SCI FI ;)
