Live Free or Die Hard

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

Live Free or Die Hard PosterThe wave of summer blockbusters is coming to a close. The only movie that is left on my radar is Transformers. I can’t say I’ve been a fan of the Die Hard series but I think I just got converted to an action film junkie. Yes, the story takes places in the US just before the 4th of July weekend. It so happens that cyber terrorists decide to show the nation they are not safe in the hands of the established leaders. John McClane (Bruce Willis) is sent out to pick up a young man name Matt Farrell (Justin Long) who is suspected to have attacked the department of cyber security of the FBI. However, it turns out that the real bad guys want him dead and make sure all loose ends are tied. That scene was available on Yahoo Movies and this is part of what brought me to go out and see the movie.

It’s action packed, very funny and great entertainment. Now I want to go back and look at the previous movies to see how I would rate those because this one was really, dare I say, cool.
I highly recommend it, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. It ended with a neat satisfaction of a good time spent. I’ll go and give it a 8.5 out of 10. The only down side is some of the regular no bullets hit the good guy, or the government not being on top of things and letting a police detective save the entire nation. By the way, this movie is also known as Die Hard 4.0 outside North America.

The 4400

I can’t believe how many shows I keep missing out, only to discover years later. Hopefully this time around this show has not been cancelled yet and I even discovered they were renewed for a fourth season. The show is called The 4400 and I’ve heard of it in a while but it’s never interesting to jump into a show when it’s been airing for three years. I caught glimpse of it on the Space channel and was immediately interested to hear that these people had special abilities. Little more was needed for me to run out and seek all three seasons and watch every available episode back to back.

The premise of the show is simple and they were nice to add a reminder of that during the latter season. Over the past 60 years, people have been abducted (just disappeared) only to be returned all together in a ball of light. At first they were welcomed in fear and apprehension of not knowing what their purpose was and how the mysterious abilities they had were to play in the world we live in.

You don’t have to be a science fiction lover to enjoy what the show has to offer. But I will admit that it does not really improve the genre. After catching up in a record time last night. I went over to see when the fourth season would start and it seems to be TONIGHT at 9PM. Talk about weird timing… perhaps the future has a plan for me… And how can you say no to some Darth Vader mind choking and ultimate fight against good and evil. You’re served with mind readers, future viewers, healers and all sort of crazy powers. You can watch the season three finale on USA’s website and be sure to tune in to see how the battle of the future is settled in the past.

HP Scanjet 2200c

Sunday, June 10th, 2007

Back in 2000 I bought myself a scanner. It was only $99 CND and found it to be quite useful from time to time. It’s nothing fancy but I really have a practical use from the HP Scanjet 2200c. I remember back then was the time Windows XP became available and the documentation for the scanner informed me that drivers for Windows XP were available through their website and all.

Years have gone by and I still use this scanner and since it’s fully functional there is no need to purchase a new one, or those fancy printers that are multi-purpose. When I first started to test Windows Vista (before it’s release), the drivers worked with any trouble until a certain build and then my scanner became inoperable on Windows Vista because the drivers were not recognised. HP official word is that that equipment is too old anyway and they won’t bother to make new drivers for it. So for sometime I plugged my scanner into my Windows XP laptop instead but I know eventually all my systems will run Vista.

2200cToday I found a post on an Dutch forum a way to trick Vista in accepting the old drivers. Don’t connect the scanner yet. First you need to find the HP PrecisionScan LTX software and drivers available via HP’s website. You need to extract the files out the executable and run the setup.exe as a Windows XP Service Pack 2 compatible program (right click the file, then proprieties, compatibility tab). Once you’re done installing the program you’ll need to browse to the folder were it was installed (inside the Program Files folder), there should be nine executables in there. Change all of their compatibility mode to Windows 2000. Once it’s done plug the scanner via USB and Windows Vista will recognise the hardware and use the drivers already installed.

On my first attempt the HP PrecisionScan LTX crashed and could not initiate a scan, it was partially expected from what I could decipher on the forum post.

[UPDATE]: It seems I was too quick to rule out HP’s software. I’ve tryed it again and it works like a charm. The following options are viable alternate scanning software but I’d better stick with the original now that it is working

The final step is to find a scanning software that is compatible with Windows Vista, like VueScan and use it. I can confirm I’ve been able to scan documents and images without trouble. However since VueScan is a paid software I’ll try and run XSane instead; it’s open source and worked wonders with my scanner when using Linux.

I Am Legend

I Am Legend - PosterHave you missed the Will Smith from Independence Day or I, Robot? You might get your fix of action packed adventure with his next movie. This trailer hit the web yesterday and I remember reading about the story this movie would cover. A post apocalyptic world where “zombies/vampires” have taken over, he is the only man left. The description from Apple is quite descriptive, I invite you to watch the trailer and see what you think of it. I Am Legend should come this December.

Robert Neville (Will Smith) is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable…and manmade. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City…and maybe the world. But he is not alone. He is surrounded by “the Infected”—victims of the plague who have mutated into carnivorous beings who can only exist in the dark and who will devour or infect anyone or anything in their path. For three years, Neville has spent his days scavenging for food and supplies and faithfully sending out radio messages, desperate to find any other survivors who might be out there. All the while, the Infected lurk in the shadows, watching Neville’s every move, waiting for him to make a fatal mistake. Perhaps mankind’s last, best hope, Neville is driven by only one remaining mission: to find a way to reverse the effects of the virus using his own immune blood. But his blood is also what The Infected hunt, and Neville knows he is outnumbered and quickly running out of time.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

Four elements, water, fire, air and earth. Teenage characters that have to save the world. Thrilling action sequences and great peril. That pretty much sums up the essence of Avatar: The Last Airbender. The story is about a kid named Aang who turns out to be the Avatar. He’s capable of “bending” all four elements and is posed a the saviour of the world. Their world is divided in four nations in which they each control a specific element. However the fire nation decided to rule and started a war with the other nations that has been burning for over a 100 years.

Avatar Aang

I’ve always found cartoon from my youth to be the only ones worth a while but was proven wrong by this new show. I caught up to it and now just can’t wait for the release of the third season. The show has compelling story and characters. I get a few good laughs from it and I’m passionate about people coming into their powers and surpassing evil. Nothing that fresh apart that this show is not from the 90s. The third season is expected in Fall 2007. I can’t wait for the show now.
