When ever you get to a party, and you’re really late, you feel as if you’ve been missing out on a bunch of cool stuff. So I got myself a PS3 just before the holidays and I’ve been going through a bunch of games I never got to play before. So here is to the first one I’ve completed, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

It’s hard to describe how much fun I had playing that video game. It was release back in Q4 2007 and was appreciated by many critics. Now I’ve tried playing a Tomb Raider game before, and totally hated it. But this video game, is a live action adventure in the making. The characters are highly relatable and most of the mechanics of the game are plain fun. Simple puzzle solving, jumping from ledge to ledge, always on the brink of death. Many times I got a high stress level simply because I didn’t want my character to die. Usually it’s simple to discard this feeling considering nowadays you simply re-spawn to the check point that was 20 seconds ago.

Nathan Drake, is a really cool character to play and the story is not mind blowing. But I still felt compelled to complete the story, especially considering a sequel has been recently announced for this fall. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves will resume his adventures. Now I had tried the demo a while before purchasing the game, and I’ll have to say that the combat was very frustrating, as I recall I did not even complete the demo because I found the shooting was way too hard. At the same time it’s on this same spot I got stuck a few times, getting killed by hordes of pirates going in and out of cover. I guess I’m not use to aiming in 3rd person view. Nice balance between exploration, fighting and shooting. The cut-scenes helped the story move on while adding a great narrative value to the story.

It’s a must own title in my book.

The news took the Internet by storm this week-end when Blizzard announced that Diablo 3 is in developpment. Many had speculated that it was about time they gave sign of life to this franchise and I can say I’m genuinely looking forward to it. The original Diablo was my first Mature rated game and I clearly remember how under aged I was back then. It’s a good old hack and slash RPG, played mostly with the mouse (point and click). If you visit their official website you can see a theatrical teaser that announces the new game, along a 22 minutes video that demonstrates the gameplay with two different character classes. You can get up to speed with the franchise by reading or listening to Cain’s journal that summerises events from the original Diablo, Diablo II, and the expansion set called Lord of Destruction. I just hope this will be released this year! Who needs Starcraft II or Warth of the Lich King when a new Diablo game is coming.
This is a wallpaper taken from the website but optimised for widescreen displays. It sports 1440×900 pixels. Enjoy… AND THE HEAVENS… SHALL TREMBLE.

Jeff Cannata, Dan Trachtenberg and Alex Albertch bring you the latest news, reviews and previews from movies, video games, comics, television and all things rad. Their adventure started in March 2007 and they’ve hosted 60 episodes so far. The show comes out on a weekly basis and thanks to Revision3′s distribution methods it’s available in a wide range of formats and devices. Whether you have a cellphone, an iPod or a computer you can download a new episode is available every Tuesday for free. They have their own website with a weekly poll tied to the show and they aggregate various news stories so you can keep up with the ever changing world.

The original idea of the show is like the one of friends having a “couch discussion”, only they wanted to add a little more by filming in front of a green screen where they can have different contextual background and where Steve, the editor, can insert graphics and comments related to the discussion at hand.

This show is pretty much about all the stuff I like and talk about on this blog, a few times I’ve mentioned TRS (Totally Rad Show) with my reviews of Cloverfield and Shaolin Soccer. This show is one of the best you can watch on the web.

The best way to experience the show is to have a quick look at it, here is their latest release. You can visit their show page to access the various formats to download or to stream it.

But it might as well be because God of War: Chains of Olympus is to be released on March 4th 2008. It’s been announced last year and the wait is finally over! The game is set as a prequel to God of War, while Kratos was first in the service of the gods.

From what I’ve gathered Morpheus, Lord of the Dreams, will have a part to play in the story line (something about the Sun falling off the sky). The plot isn’t clear but it’s not what is fun about it. It’s the game-play, the gore, the action and the thrill. The game will retail for 39.99$, but I believe it will be worth every penny. The only drawback you could consider is that this game is for the PlayStation Portable (PSP), unlike the previous games of the franchise that were on the PlaySation 2 (PS2). There has been some serious speculation that a port would come in the future. Fear not, God of War III will be released on the PlayStation 3 (PS3) sometime in 2009 you could presume.

Despite being a portable game the visuals push the PSP to it’s limits bringing the best graphics seen so far on that handheld gaming console. Mark your calendars, set yourself reminders, pre-order, buy yourself a PSP! Kratos, anti-hero of all is coming back. Who said games were for kids anyway.

Update: I’ve played the demo and I am truly amazed at how good it looks on the PSP. Readyatdawn did a great job to bring the feel of God of War to a portable game.

I just finished this game and I can say it was a pretty impressive experience. This game was released in 2005 and has gotten pretty good reviews and had felt the need to see what all the praise was about.

The game play is pretty interesting, you walk around a world populated by sixteen monsters. Most of them are giant, several stories high. You must defeat them all in order to ressurected your fallen love. Thanks to the help of Agro, your horse, you roam around a cursed land with a light sword that points the direction to the next Colossus. These creatures have specific weeks points you must discover and attack to bring them down. The game is not too long, about 11 hours and it’s part of the Greatest Hits collection. If you get to play it for a really cheap price or to rent it’s really worth a while. The fighting requires multiple steps and you have to be ingenious enough to figure out how to bring down those monsters. Imaging having to solve puzzles in real time as you battle a monster that can kill you pretty quickly. It’s really a case of a mouse trying to bring down an elephant.

The music score and the visuals a decent considering it’s a PlayStation 2 game, and at the time it was pushing the graphics of the PS2 to it’s limits. Fun and quick anyone would enjoy.

It’s time to think with portals! This game has been a huge surprise for me. Who would of though a puzzle game could creep you out, threaten the life of your character and actually care. It is not the best game I played so far but it’s an experience everyone should go through. So I finished the game in just under three hours and a half, and there are still a few bonus maps and challenges to complete. But I can say this game is worth it’s price (when included inside The Orange Box). Even it’s $19.99 stand-alone price would be worth it. The game is not funny, it’s mind boggling a reflex intensive. The story starts out at the Aperture Enrichment Center, you go through a series of test that grade in difficulty. At first you think it’s going to be very linear and you get hints that something “fishy” might happen at the end of the test. The unexpected happens and the game adopts a totally new setting. All you have for yourself is the portal gun, it allows you to open two portals that are connected, so when you pass through one, you exit on the other. You’ll have to handle cubes, gun turrets, deadly goo and energy balls. This game is close to perfect, short and precise. The end theme song is priceless after you’ve been through the game. Expirence it yourself.

For some stupid reason I’ve dedicated myself to Valve games and enjoyed playing Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode One, since then I knew there would be three episodes and I would have to buy these games down the line to enjoy the complete story. Fair enough, the next chapter has been delayed for quite some time now and is set to be released next week on October 10th.

I was extremely pissed off when Valve cancelled the release of The Black Box that would of included Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Portal and Team Fortress 2. The games I don’t already own and would gladly purchase. However now there is only The Orange Box that includes these three games and the two I already own. Every game site seems to tout it as a great deal, and price wise it’s really good. I’m sure if you’re out there and never played those games you’ll have your money’s worth of playtime. Valve has an other clever idea for their marketing, since you don’t need these games twice you should/could give them to a friend that hasn’t played these games 2 years ago. Upon release I’ll be able to send a code to a friend so he can get these two games. The thing is if he really likes it, he’ll probably end up buying The Orange Box and get stock with two copies of those games too. I would of like better respect from Valve and at some point I wanted to vote with my dollar, make them understand how wrong it is. I just wonder what will happen when they reach the end cycle for Episode Three… will they create a new bundle to rip off their loyal contributors? I believe they had the right method at first with The Black Box, but were corrupted by evil and let money get to their heads.

I’ll finish off with my appreciation of the purchase of the game via Steam, since you need the thing running anyway to play their boxed games why not get it online. It was a few clicks and hop they got money through PayPal. The games are associated with my Steam account and through a nice pre-order discount I saved a total of 16$ compared to what my local Canadian retailer would of charged me. I consider this my first digital purchase and I think it might grow on me…

Expect a review soon, if you never played those games before look-out for massive give aways in the coming weeks, not from me – but from all the ones buying this bundle across the globe. Half-Life 2 made a kind of revolution in my gaming life with a solid story line and cinematic value action adventure.

I must get all my due for being right about the PSP redesign, a lot of people said it would come. It has been in the rumor stage for months and was confirmed earlier this year at E3. The only thing is that the world had to wait until September to get their hands on it. When it comes to Sony gaming products I’ve been a fan of their redesigns and can say that for the PSOne and PS2 found my money well invested. When it comes to portable gaming I’ve never been a huge fan of it. I mean, the last thing I had is the original Game Boy, I had three games for it; Tetris, Donkey Kong and Pokemon Blue.

The reason I conveinced myself to purchase a PlayStation Portable is because of the games. I wanted to play Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. I want to enjoy God of War: Chains of Olympus and Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core coming out next year. The price was good and the money was there. But after 10 days I can say that I haven’t got a lot of time to play with it (to play at all; remember Bioshock… not done yet).

The PSP still has some nice games coming it’s way and the developers seem to have a nice hold of it’s technology. The package I purchased came with Daxter, a Family Guy UMD and a 1GB Memory Stick. It’s still a bit pricey but I would never trade that for a DS Lite, despite the price difference, I want some serious gaming on my handheld, otherwise I’d rather just play with what’s on my phone.

Just in case you’re still wandering, the new PSP is slimmer and lighter. It has apparently a brighter screen, and thanks to a decision made by Sony, all PSPs will be able to access the whole processing power of the device. This way developers will be able to push the games a little further.

I’m not sure how far I am into the game but I can tell you I enjoy very much. I got into it because a friend of mine was praising the game so much I had to give it a try. As soon as the demo came out on the PC and done trying it, my mind was set to purchase the game. Even if it is classified as a first person shooter (FPS) it is truly “genetically evolved”. Aside the classic melee weapons, shotgun, and pistol you get to use Plasmids. These injections allow you to use powers like fire, electricity, telekinesis and many more. The design of the game is beautiful and the art direction really made it look as if you we’re in the 60s. You get to loot items off enemies but also to buy items with the money you found or took off corpses. The game is set in the city of Rapture we’re every bit of the utopia it was meant to be has gone wild. The abusive use of gene modification drove everyone to madness and you as a sole survivor of your plane crash have to fight your way into safety.

There has been a lot of talk about DRM issues that crippled the game and even anti-virus software that detected it as a virus. Just yesterday AVG locked out my Bioshock and I had to swap to a avast! instead. I feel bad that users are the ones who have to live with all the trouble. People who pirate the game probably has a seamless experience as soon as they crack the games protection. Anyhow I’m still enjoying the game and haven’t felt as much tension in a game before. Those Big Daddies are fierce enemies and those little sisters are really creepy. You have the choice to harvest them to get maximum reward but if your heart is in the right place you will save them and still be rewarded in other ways. I must state that this game is still rated M for mature and even adults should be cautious due to the extreme gore and violence. I strongly suggest you at least try the demo if you PC can run it. You might fall in love with the experience.

Can’t get enough of Kratos action? You’ve already played God of War and God of War II? How about test your skills on the go? The official announcement was given via an ad with GoW II. The game is called God of War: Chains of Olympus and should come to the PlayStation Portable sometime this year. The first teaser trailer has hit the web and can be viewed at the end of the post. The official site is not fully operational yet… but there is a sign up to get a demo disk. I’m not sure if the story line is a sequel. It gave me the impression that it circles around adventures during or before the original God of War. Will have to wait a little more in order to get more information. But the graphics look sick! I mean it’s on a portable device… take that Nintendo DS!

At last, I have finished the game. Overall I enjoyed every single moment of it. I am of those who believe this sequel is even better than the original God of War that was already perfect. I will call God of War II super-perfect in the sense of game play and cinematic value. My expectations were even surpassed when it comes to the improvements they’ve been able to make. They’ve been able to pick up the story get rid of little flaws and add to what people loved about the first installment. They have managed to keep everything that was epic about the first game and port it over to a sequel, it can be considered one of the very last “great” game to come to the PlayStation 2. You start the game with your favorite anti-hero Kratos, now a god.

After defeating Ares you decide to guide your people (the Spartans) to many wars and thanks to your power they are victorious (one would assume). However the other gods in Olympus are not happy with the way you do things (just like they didn’t really like Ares). Once you arrive on the battlefield as a giant you are betrayed and part of your powers are taken away. You are reduced to human size and must fight the Colossus of Rhodes that has been animated by godly powers. From that first act, the story takes many twists and turns to bring you to the ground, back to a mere mortal and force you to re-establish your powers. In order to change your fate, Gaïa the Titan helps you reach the Sisters of Fate that could change your past, thus insuring your future.

Just like the first game you fight your way through mythical enemies and meet others seeking the sisters of fate. The combos that were present in the first game were slightly altered to give it something new, but in the end it’s still a combination of button mashing and blocking at the right time. About half way through the game you find the Golden Fleece that allows you to deflect an energy attack right back at your enemies, the trick is that you need to block at the exact time your about to be hit. You come across new spells to cast upon your enemies and you have a new rage mode that allows you to increase the damage you can make. Finally you have more alternate weapons that you can use (up to three this time). You really feel for your character and even if you don’t agree with all his methods it’s a heart pumping adrenaline rush. The finale is epic and the unlockable bonuses will keep me playing for some time. I will not spoil by saying that I’ll be waiting for God of War III and a PSP title later this year and in 2008. I’ll give God of War 2 a 10 out of 10, being the greatest game to be ever released on the PS2, seeing that game (and how good it looks) makes you forget about all this next generation graphics thing.
